Daniel Girard Appointed Co-Lead Counsel in TurboTax Class Action

08.19.2019

U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer on August 19 appointed Daniel C. Girard of Girard Sharp to serve as co-lead counsel alongside Norman E. Siegel of Stueve Siegel Hanson in a class action charging that Intuit Inc., maker of TurboTax, deliberately impeded access to a free online tax-filing program required by the IRS. Read a copy of the court order here.

The “Free File” program is intended to allow low-income taxpayers to prepare and file their federal and state taxes online for free. Since 2002, TurboTax has been in partnership with the IRS to provide free online tax-preparation and -filing services to millions of taxpayers; the Intuit-IRS agreement has been renewed through October 31, 2021.

Recent lawsuits alleged that Intuit actively discouraged millions of taxpayers from using its free software for years. Intuit is alleged to have engaged in false advertising and deliberately concealed its free-filing program, steering customers instead to its own paid tax-filing portal.

If you paid to file taxes through TurboTax and were eligible to file for free, you may have a claim for relief. Protect your rights by speaking with a Girard Sharp public protection attorney at 415-981-4800 or follow us on Twitter @GirardSharp for updates.
