Lenovo Adware Settlement Gains Preliminary Approval
On November 21, 2018, U.S. District Judge Haywood S. Gilliam, Jr. granted preliminary approval to settlements with Lenovo and Superfish totaling $8.3 million.
The consumer class action arose from the undisclosed installation of technology called VisualDiscovery on Lenovo laptop computers. The plaintiffs alleged that VisualDiscovery intercepted user data to generate targeted ads and slowed computer performance speeds.
The settlement with Lenovo followed the court’s certification of a class in October 2016. Owners of the affected computers can make claims out of the settlement fund starting in early 2019.
