More Information on John Deere’s Repair Restraints

Since 2018, John Deere appears to have increasingly used software in its tractors that produces an error code in the motherboard when a tractor breaks down. This error code automatically puts the tractor in “limp mode” which allows it to move slowly, but not operate fully.

No matter how big or small the repair, farmers are reportedly forced to fix it immediately—but they reportedly have no way of fixing the issue unless they take the tractor to an authorized John Deere dealer. Only those John Deere dealerships have the ability to unlock the code and fix the machine. Many of these repairs are reportedly for relatively simple problems that farmers previously could fix themselves on older tractor models that do not include John Deere’s new technology. And the cost of the repair by the John Deere dealer reportedly exceeds the cost of self-repair or independent third-party repair.
