More Information on NEC and Associated Baby Formula Risks

NEC is a serious gastrointestinal problem primarily affecting premature babies, which usually develops two to six weeks after birth. The condition inflames the intestinal tissue, causing it to die. A hole may form in the baby’s intestine, causing bacteria to leak into the abdomen or bloodstream and leading to serious infection. Many infants survive—often with serious long-term injuries—while more severe cases can lead to death.

Medical professionals often advise parents of prematurely born infants to give them baby formula to help support their extra nutritional needs and assist with weight gain. Recent evidence, however, suggests that certain brands of baby formula, including Enfamil and Similac, can cause infants to develop potentially deadly NEC. Manufacturers of these formulas, including Abbott Laboratories and Mead Johnson & Company, do not include this potentially life-threatening side effect on warning labels.

To date, multiple lawsuits have been filed against these manufacturers due to infants developing NEC after ingesting defendants’ baby formulas. These cases allege that the defendants’ failure to adequately warn of the risks of developing NEC caused parents to unknowingly put their premature infants at risk.
