ZF-TRW Air Bag Failure Investigation

04.23.2019

Girard Sharp is investigating reports that more than 12 million vehicles manufactured by different car companies may have been equipped with malfunctioning air bag controls produced by ZF-TRW. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) is currently investigating whether the air bag control units in vehicles made by Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, and Fiat Chrysler between 2010 and 2019 are defective.

Overview of the Reported Defect

On April 23, the Wall Street Journal reported that NHTSA is investigating whether the air bag control units in approximately 12.3 million vehicles malfunction. The units in question were manufactured by ZF-TRW.

Documents released by NHTSA show that unwanted electrical signals produced during a collision can damage or even disable an air bag control circuit housed in the passenger compartment. As a result, the air bags may fail to deploy.

The documents also show that NHTSA upgraded its probe on April 19th from a preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis, effectively expanding the scope of its investigation. The upgrade came after investigators became aware of two recent serious crashes involving 2018 and 2019 Toyota Corollas in which the air bags did not inflate. One person involved in these accidents is reported to have died, and there are reports that the alleged defect may have been responsible for as many as eight deaths.
