In early September 2019, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles sent letters to 56 patients and their families notifying them of a freezer malfunction that resulted in the loss of their child’s blood stem cells.
According to a press release published by the hospital, these blood stem cells, all of which were collected from patients, were in long-term storage. When excess cells collected during the early stages of a child’s course of oncology therapy are not needed, they remain in storage for possible future use.
The release also specified that the cause of the freezer malfunction was “a failure of freezer temperature sensors,” and that “safeguards were in place at the time but were insufficient.”
