More Information on the Flagstar Breach

Flagstar partners with Accellion, a third-party software vendor, to transfer large files, which can include sensitive personal information. Flagstar reportedly learned from Accellion of a breach of its electronic systems on January 22. According to Accellion, it notified Flagstar customers of the breach on December 23. Flagstar first announced the breach on its website on March 5, but it did not state that Social Security numbers had been exposed. Two weeks later, Flagstar disclosed that the compromised information includes Social Security numbers and began notifying victims of the breach by email and U.S. mail.
