According to a letter sent from the hospital to the Iowa Attorney General, the breach is said to have occurred between May 15 and June 24, 2020. It has been reported the attackers gained unauthorized access to an employee’s email account that had access to personal and health information of approximately 60,000 individuals. The attack was discovered on June 24 when the compromised employee email account began sending spam emails.
Mercy Iowa City Hospital stated they sent notices to all individuals that were potentially impacted by the data breach and outlined steps they could take to protect themselves. The hospital is also offering free data theft protection services to individuals whose information was compromised.
