More Information on the Natera Billing Investigation

Natera offers a range of genetic tests to pregnant women and those trying to conceive. According to recent reports, the company’s brochures and other marketing channels indicate to patients that they will be charged no more than $249 out-of-pocket. Natera also reportedly requests insurance information from patients, telling them they will be contacted with an estimate and a choice of how to pay (through insurance or cash). Once a patient has provided her insurance information, however, Natera reportedly does not send an estimate and payment option, but instead simply runs the tests and bills the patient the amount determined to be her responsibility—sometimes thousands of dollars. Additionally, Natera reportedly does not disclose the full charge for a test and advertises a “Price Transparency Program” to which the company does not adhere.
