More Information on False Positive Noninvasive Prenatal Testing

A recent New York Times report stated that positive results from noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for serious, deadly genetic conditions are “usually” wrong. The report reviewed data from some of the top companies that administer NIPT, like Natera, Labcorp, Baylor Genetics, Myriad Genetics, and Combimatrix, and found that up to 85% of positive results for the following conditions were false:

  • DiGeorge syndrome
  • Cri-du-chat syndrome
  • Prader-Willi and Angelman syndromes
  • Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome
  • 1p36 deletion

Many of these companies are advertising their tests—to both patients and doctors—without offering data on their accuracy or mentioning false positives.

False positive results for serious genetic conditions can cause needless distress and heartache among prospective parents, or even terminations of wanted pregnancies. Receiving an inaccurate fetal diagnosis also can cost patients thousands of dollars in recommended follow-up testing, which typically occurs in the latter half of pregnancy terms.
