San Jose State / Scott Shaw Sexual Abuse Investigation

Girard Sharp lawyers are investigating potential claims on behalf of women who were treated by Scott Shaw, formerly the director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer at San Jose State University.

Shaw is accused of sexually abusing female athletes during his time at the university. After investigating claims against Shaw in 2010, San Jose State cleared him of wrongdoing. Allegations resurfaced a decade later when San Jose State’s women’s swimming coach, Sage Hopkins, compiled a 300-page dossier with evidence from female athletes, prompting the university to re-open a Title IX investigation.

In 2009, 17 San Jose State swimming and diving athletes, together with a water polo athlete and a gymnastics athlete, reported that Shaw had touched them inappropriately during treatment. The university cleared Shaw of wrongdoing and he remained in his position for the next ten years.

A new series of Title IX investigations by the California State University system recently found that Shaw committed sexual misconduct, concluding that physical therapy treatments he administered lacked a medical basis, ignored proper protocols, and violated sexual harassment policies. Shaw resigned from his position in August 2020.
