TikTok, formerly known as Musical.ly, is a lip-syncing app on which users can create and record short looping videos of themselves set to music. The app has been installed over a billion times, and after a $3 billion infusion from investors in October 2018, TikTok is now considered one of the most valuable privately-held startups worldwide.
According to recent reports, TikTok collects, captures, and stores its users’ private, biometric information. The app reportedly scans a user’s facial geometry before running an algorithm to determine the user’s age. Furthermore, users of the app are reportedly not informed that their biometric data is being collected, and TikTok does not disclose what they do with that data, who has access to the data, and where and for how long the data is stored. These actions would constitute a violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Protection Act.
